- Crowns and Bridges
Among the most commonly performed dental restorations are crowns and bridges. Crowns are designed to fit snugly over a natural tooth already securely in place. A cap or crown is often required to prevent the worsening of such problems as fractures, cracks, and already existing tooth decay.
A bridge consists of a minimum of two crowns, each attached to an artificial tooth, replacing a lost or missing tooth.
How Do I Know If I Need a Crown or a Bridge?
To determine if you need a crown or a bridge, you will first need to schedule an appointment to see your dentist. Your dentist will examine your teeth and assess the extent of the repair required. Your dentist will determine whether a crown or bridge is needed during the evaluation. Some of the conditions that commonly require a crown include:
- A cracked tooth
- Tooth sensitivity to cold and pressure
- Advanced tooth decay
- Diseased tooth pulp
- Broken amalgam fillings
A bridge may be the recommended route if your dentist identifies one of the following dental issues in your mouth:
- A missing tooth or teeth
- Partial dentures that could be improved with a permanent bridge
