Dentures can help restore your smile to its most natural-looking appearance if you are missing teeth or require extractions. Dentures are removable appliances designed to look like your natural teeth.
When first wearing dentures, there is an adjustment period during which your dentures may feel foreign to you. Over time, your dentures will become as comfortable and familiar as a favourite shirt.
Are There Different Types of Dentures?
There are two different types of dentures: partial and full. Your dentist can assist you with determining which of these two denture types is the right choice for you.
What are Full Dentures?
Full dentures are the best choice if you miss all of your teeth or need to have your remaining teeth extracted. Complete extraction is typically the recommended treatment if your teeth are affected by decay or gum disease and cannot be saved.
There are two types of complete dentures: conventional and immediate. Conventional dentures are dental appliances implemented in the mouth after your mouth has fully healed from the extractions. Since this process can take up to 12 weeks, some people prefer to be fitted for immediate dentures, which can be worn directly after removing the teeth from the mouth. Immediate dentures are suitable for use just after your surgery has been completed. However, immediate dentures most often need adjustments to ensure a proper fit once your mouth is fully healed and all gum shifting is complete.
What are Partial Dentures?
Partial dentures are the ideal choice if you still have some natural teeth in your upper and lower jaw. Partial dentures created from impressions of your jaws snap into place around your natural teeth to provide a perfect fit.
Partial dentures can be permanently implemented into your mouth or made into a removable appliance. Removable partial dentures allow for easy cleaning of your natural teeth and can also be taken out of your mouth for eating if easier. Fixed dentures are secured into your mouth with a strong adhesive applied to the surrounding teeth.
How Do I Take Care of My Dentures?
Dentures are hardy but can be broken if not treated with care. When not worn in the mouth, your dentures should be soaked in a receptacle filled with clean water or a cleaner recommended by your dentist. Care must be taken not to immerse your dentures in water that is exceptionally hot as the heat can cause warping to your dental appliance.
To preserve the life of your dentures, they should be properly cleaned every day. Using a soft toothbrush, dental cleaner, and cool water, carefully scrub each facet of your dentures. When your dentures have been removed, be sure to rinse your mouth to help eliminate any plaque. This will help to prevent infection from taking root in the mouth.
