The best way to ensure a healthy smile is for dental care to begin during childhood. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry encourages parents to take their children for their first dental appointment as early as one year of age or at the appearance of the child’s first tooth in the gum line.
This first appointment in a child’s life is critical for your child’s future dental health and your dentist. During this initial appointment, your dentist will conduct a thorough examination. Following this assessment, your dentist can teach you the appropriate way to address any oral health concerns for your child, as well as proper hygiene for continued healthy teeth and gums.Â
When your child’s first tooth breaks through, it is time for you to begin the lifelong good habit of tooth brushing. As your child ages, you will need to pass this information along to your child, ensuring they have a thorough understanding of both brushing and flossing. By establishing this pattern early on, you lay the foundation for optimal lifelong oral health.
How Often Does My Child Need to Visit the Dentist?
Children should visit a dentist twice yearly; the same recommended number of visits for adults. During childhood, your child’s mouth will undergo many changes. Malocclusions, cavities, and other dental issues can occur as the mouth grows. If these dental problems are detected and repaired early, they rarely result in more severe or permanent problems.
What Approach Does Alpine Dental Take to Pediatric Dentistry?
At Alpine Dental, we emphasize proactive dental care during the childhood and adult years. This approach helps to ensure ongoing dental health and prevents minor issues from developing into significant problems.Â
A key component of our pediatric dentistry program is patient education. Caring for your child’s teeth at home is as important as twice-yearly dental examinations and cleanings. In addition to at-home care and regular pediatric dental cleanings, we can also make use of such preventive strategies as sealants and mouthguards to reduce incidents of tooth decay and tooth damage that could have an impact on your child’s adult teeth.
My Child is Afraid of the Dentist—Can You Help?
It’s not uncommon for children to have a fear of the dentist. At Alpine Dental, we make it our highest priority to help set your child at ease. From our welcoming atmosphere in our waiting room to our friendly staff and gentle patient care, your child will soon view the dentists at Alpine Dental as friends and not foes.Â
We carefully explain each step of the cleaning process to your child, taking the time to listen to their concerns and fears and provide support and encouragement. We welcome you to accompany your child into the treatment room for moral support for exceptionally anxious children.
