Root Canal

A root canal is when the diseased pulp is removed from the middle of a tooth. Once the tooth has been thoroughly cleaned, the tooth is then filled with a material that protects the tooth. This procedure allows you to keep your natural tooth instead of extracting it.

A root canal is typically done under local anesthesia and is not painful.

How Will I Know if I Need a Root Canal?

If the pulp within your tooth shows signs of infection, disease, or decay, you will need to have it removed. Since pulp helps your tooth to retain its natural shape, a root canal is the best option to save the tooth. 

There are many ways that pulp can become damaged or infected. These include:

  • Too many dental processes
  • Damage to the pulp from an unfilled cavity
  • A tooth injury
  • A chipped or cracked tooth

If you think you may need a root canal, there are definite signs that you will notice. Following a thorough dental examination, your dentist can confirm if this treatment is proper for you. Among the symptoms you may see are:

  • Pain in the affected tooth
  • Swelling of the gums
  • Hotness in the tissue around the tooth

Are There Any Risks to Having a Root Canal?

Root canal treatment is done to allow you to keep your natural tooth. However, there are times when the damage to the affected tooth is too substantial for the tooth to be saved. If the surgery is unlikely to be successful, your dentist may recommend that you simply have the tooth extracted. 

There are more significant risks to not having a root canal done than undergoing the procedure. The longer diseased pulp remains in your tooth and thus in your mouth, the greater the chance that infection will spread to other areas of your body. Severe infections can put your life in jeopardy. The longer infection is allowed to linger, the greater the risk that an antibiotic will not be sufficient to eliminate any infection.
