- Scaling and Root Planing in Vancouver & Burnaby, BC
Your dentist may recommend scaling or root planing. This type of treatment is utilized to provide the more intensive cleaning required for the elimination of plaque and tartar found beneath the gum line and on the surface of the gums.
If your teeth and gums are starting to show signs of periodontal disease, scaling and root planing is essential to support your future dental health.
What is Tooth Scaling?
Tooth scaling is the careful scraping of the sections of the teeth found beneath the gums. The procedure intends to remove all calculus and tartar from the teeth and gums and prevent the progress of periodontal disease. The procedure is typically done under a local anesthetic only.
The areas addressed during tooth scaling are as follows:
- Beneath and between gum tissue
- Tooth crowns
- Tooth roots
Tooth scaling can be done entirely by hand with a metal tooth scaler or with an ultrasonic tool.
What is Root Planing?
Root planing involves the smoothing of rough edges on the teeth to eliminate any bacteria accumulating underneath the surface of the gums. During the procedure, your dentist will utilize tools to reach beneath your gum line to eliminate plaque and tartar attached to the roots of your teeth. This process helps to prevent infection from occurring.
