Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth are the third set of molars that typically appear in the mouth between 17 and 25. If your wisdom teeth erupt in your mouth without causing any overcrowding, impaction, or pain, you may be able to keep them.

However, many people do suffer from misalignment problems or infection due to their wisdom teeth, and thus, must have them removed.

Failure to have misaligned wisdom teeth removed can lead to a host of future dental problems, including:

  • Incorrect final horizontal positioning
  • Overcrowding
  • Damage to the surrounding teeth, jawbone, or nerves

Will My Recovery Be Difficult After Wisdom Teeth Extraction?

The amount of time required to recover from wisdom teeth extraction will depend on how difficult the surgery was. If the teeth were very simple to extract, you could expect to start feeling better 24 hours after the procedure. More complicated extractions will take longer for you to recover from.

In the 24 hours following your extractions, you can expect the following:

  • Mild bleeding for a few hours post-extraction
  • Temporary swelling of the mouth and face
  • Discomfort or mild pain
  • A liquid diet only
  • Antibiotics to treat infection (if necessary)
